Calorie Requirements During Pregnancy

All too often women use pregnancy as an excuse to eat whatever they want. Unfortunately this attitude poses not only negative maternal consequences, but also creates potential health problems for your unborn in utero and later in life. Take into consideration that the recommended daily caloric intake during pregnancy is only an extra 100 calories in the first trimester, 200 in the second trimester and 300 in the third trimester. This is an increased caloric intake equivalent to an extra apple and a banana per day during advanced stages of the prenatal period. An eye-opening bit of information for women that might be taking the old adage “eating for two” quite literally!
